If you have a health condition that makes it difficult for you to climb up and down stairs, a stairlift is the perfect solution as it rids you of stair-related dilemmas by offering easy mobility. Basically, all stairlifts serve the same purpose. However, stairlifts differ depending on the individual's needs, and the shape and measurements of the staircase. When thinking of buying a stairlift, there are some factors you need to take into consideration.

The first and foremost is the cost. The costs of the stairlifts vary, depending upon the type, shape, size and manufacturer. The cost will also depend on whether you are getting a new stairlift or a used one. If you need a Straight Stairlift, you can get a used one that has been reconditioned. A Reconditioned Stairlift is cheaper than a new one. However, in the case of Curved Stairlifts, the cost is very high as they have to be custom made and you cannot obtain a used Curved Stairlift, because the curvature and dimensions of your staircase cannot possibly be the same as someone else's.

The engine and gearbox of a stairlift are usually covered by warranty for life, and almost all the suppliers provide a one-year warranty for the other components. After the warranty expires, the suppliers provide spare components at reasonable prices. You should make sure that the stairlift supplier provides 24/7 support in the case of breakdowns, and also for repairs and maintenance. Servicing of the stairlift should be done every year for smooth and reliable functioning.

The installation of the stairlift depends on its type. A straight stairlift can be installed in two to three hours, while a Curved Stairlift may take weeks - and in some cases even months - to install. It is best and safest to let an expert install the stairlift for you, so that there is no risk of injury while using it. After the stairlift has been installed, you should ask for a demonstration so that you are sure how to operate it.

It is very important to consider the usability of a stairlift so that you can manoeuvre it safely and easily. Mostly, Stairlifts offer swivels so that you can easily mount and dismount on the top or landing of the stairs.

Many suppliers are offering several modern and innovative, as well as classic, designs for Stairlifts. You can choose the design that you like best, and you can also choose the colour of the upholstery - and some suppliers also let you choose the texture of the fabric.

The most important thing is to choose a supplier who has a reputation for excellent quality and service. You should take your time while deciding on a single supplier after obtaining quotations from several suppliers, and then choosing the one that is experienced and best suits your needs.

3 wheel mobility scooters http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=69

If you or a loved one is suffering from the anxiety of not being as mobile as you once was there is help for you. If you are not able to go and do as you once could but still feel desire to get out and go, the mobility scooter may be the help you have been dreaming of. There are a lot of reasons a person may not be as mobile as they once was. It could be due to a number of different conditions, either physical, muscular or from bone problems. Perhaps it is just a short term disability such as a car wreck or even certain types of surgery could have left you needing help to get around.

The decision to purchase a mobility scooter will help to install an instant piece of mind. These mobility scooters help to reinstall a new sense confidence in the consumer. If you are acquiring this for yourself, no more having to wait on some else to come do for you or being left behind because you can not hold out to walk very far. If you are getting this for a loved one, it will also help you. It is so sad to leave a loved one behind because they can not hold out for too long.

Now the choice of a 3 or a 4 wheel mobility scooter will have to be determined. One of the advantages of the 3 wheel scooter over the 4 wheel scooter is the turn radius. With the 3 wheel mobility scooter having a 30% smaller turn radius, this equals to a turn radius of around 36 inches less then the 4 wheel mobility scooter. This will allow for easy use inside the house and in smaller places. Maneuvering around the home, bathroom and kitchen is not a problem for the 3 wheel mobility scooter.

The 3 wheel mobility scooters will also have a lighter weight advantage over the 4 wheel mobility scooters. The frame is lighter and this will make storage or transportation easier. With the advantage of being lighter and more maneuverable, the lack of the fourth wheel will also result in the lose a bit of the stability. The 3 wheeled mobility scooters are very safe, they will give up a little of the weight capacity. Keep in mind the 3 wheel scooters are not designed for the rugged outdoor terrain. This is not to say the 3 wheel scooter can not be used outside, it can. It is great on the paved surfaces, but if you are a outdoors type person that will not always be on the sidewalks or in a shopping mall, you may need to consider a a 4 wheel design.

Life with a stairlift...

A revolutionary and extremely convenient product that has been designed to help the disabled and the aged in moving around is the stairlift. The stairlift was developed to help people move themselves easily from one floor to the other without the assistance of anyone else. From the time it was invented, it has undergone many functional changes to make it more comfortable and user friendly.

There are various advantages involved in installing a stair lift, the first being the very easy and simple installation. All this device requires is a rail to be fitted along the stair wall and the lift moves either up or down as the user wants. To make the operation easier, the controls are fixed on the chair itself or a remote can also be used.

With the advances in technology, stairlifts are now available for both straight and curved staircases. Stairlifts come with comfortable seats attached to them and this is what makes moving up or down on them very comfortable. Usually these mobility devices are battery powered and this is a huge advantage if the users have to use them during power cuts. Charging points for stairlifts are located at the bottom or top of the stairs.

These stairlifts can be extremely useful for domestic purposes. With this device, a disabled or elderly person will not need the assistance of anyone to go up or down at home nor will they have to stay either upstairs or downstairs until assistance is available.

Buying a stairlift. http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=65

A stairlift is the perfect solution for old or disabled people who want to live independently in their own residence. The chairlift for stairs has been a well-known product in most industrialized countries for many years. There are different vendors offering stairlifts in those countries. If you are looking for a stairway lift in Germany, I can recommend the following site, which gives some fundamental info on German companies: Treppenlift in Loehne.

It is very useful to find as many aspects as possible before making a final decision because a staircase lift is a costly product. Here are some more aspects to consider and some major advantages which arise from the use of a stairlift:

Persons, whose ability to climb stairs is reduced for instance by illness, accident or disability, will greatly profit from a stair lift. It is wise to think about reduced bodily ability, which might come with increasing age, and plan the purchase of a stairlift early enough. So you should collect sufficient information and ask your children or grandchildren to help you. Each staircase lift must fulfill very specific requirements and must be manufactured and installed accurately. It is important to know whether you have a straight staircase or curved staircase. In case of a curved staircase, the whole project will be more expensive. It is recommended to choose one of the best companies with many years of experience. They will not only provide good service but may also offer an installment plan. The most important suppliers of stair lifts provide a countrywide service and distribution system. They should be able to show you an already installed chair lift for stairs at another customers home near your location. Always ask if the first consultation is cost-free.

Why buy a mobility scooter http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=64

Why Get A Mobility Scooter

When we are young we never think about the consequences of risking life and limb doing crazy things. If we survive we look back at those times from middle age and marvel at how crazy we were and that we survived at all. Time has a way of reminding us we are not indestructible and as we get older we lose the spring in our step and eventually even the ability to walk out of the house. When that happens some people end up spending the rest of their lives looking out of the window but if you get a mobility scooter it may just change your life.

There are many times in a person's life where they will for one reason or another be unable to move around in the ways that they want to. However, in some cases this inability is more severe and permanent than in other situations. When a person comes to the point that they need help moving around and they have some money to invest, they would likely highly benefit from using mobility scooters as a means of getting from one place to another when they need to. Sometimes, the amount of money that the individual has to invest in this venture is limited.

This does not mean that the a potential buyerl needs to wait until they have more money to get help. Rather, they can choose to invest in a used mobility scooter as opposed to a brand new one. There are many reasons as to why this would be beneficial, including the fact that it obviously saves the money. Many people will also find that they are able to get the used mobility scooters more quickly as compared to ordering a new scooter simply because they do not need to save up so much money as a used mobility scooter may be half the price of a new one.

You may like the idea of a shiny new mobility scooter but being practical about the cost may be important. They can be expensive and if you would struggle to buy a new one you could get a used one for a lot less money. You can find a good selection of used mobility scooters online at auction websites and dealers.

It is very helpful that if you have access to the internet you can search for used mobility scooters on online auctions and at dealers websites. You can see them for sale from all over the country and they can be delivered to you but you can restrict your choices to local offers if you prefer. You can also try looking in local secondhand stores and in the local newspapers where people might advertize them for sale.

Curved stairlifts http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=63

A Curved Stairlift offers mobility by carrying a person up and down the stairs. Curved stairlifts are designed for staircases with bends and corners. These stairlifts are used on curved and spiral staircases. They can also be used on staircases that have multiple landings. Curved Stairlifts have to be custom-made in order to be suitable for the stairs, because staircases in every home are different with respect to their dimensions.

The staircases in every house differ in their design, length, curvature and many other factors. Therefore, if you want to purchase a Curved Stairlift, it will have to be custom made so that it exactly fits your staircase. The customisation of the Curved Stairlift is what makes it expensive. The amount that a Curved stairlift is going to cost depends upon the number of bends and the nature of the curves in your stairs, and also the length of the staircase. You will be able to get an exact quote for the installation cost only after a manufacturer takes precise measurements of your stairs.

Before buying a Curved Stairlift, one has to be very careful to decide whether they really want one or not. This is because the device cannot be sold to someone else if you change your mind, unless the person who buys the stairlift has a staircase identical to yours, which is rather unlikely. So before buying a curved staircase, you have to analyse how useful the stairlift is to you, and for how long you intend to live in the house. Buying a used Curved Stairlift (or renting one) is also not an option because of the unique measurements and proportions of the stairs.

When compared with other stairlifts, Curved Stairlifts have the advantage that they do not interfere with your staircase's beauty and elegance. Another positive thing about them is they can be installed on the inside as well as the outside path.
The greatest disadvantage of Curved Stairlifts is that they don't have any resale value, because of their custom design to fit a staircase - and you cannot buy a used Curved stairlift because of the unique measurements. The maintenance and servicing costs of Curved Stairlifts are much higher than those for other stairlifts.

If you need a Curved Stairlift, then you should take your time and find a manufacturer who can install one to suit your measurements exactly. This is important because if it doesn't fit your staircase, then you can loose a considerable amount of money. Looking for manufacturing companies on the internet is also a good option. After getting written quotations from various retailers, you should take time to think about, and then make, the decision according to your needs. It is important to find the manufacturer who provides the best quality and also has a reputable after sales services and support.

4 Advantages of Adjustable Beds http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=59

---===XML PARSE ERROR===---nbsp;Advantages of Adjustable Beds

Adjustable beds have been used in hospitals and for in-home patients for quite awhile now. However, they are becoming more and more popular for general use. Adjustable beds are defined as a bed in which the head and foot sections can move to different comfort levels. Ever since I was a little girl, I remember seeing commercials for adjustable beds on T.V. Adjustable beds aren't just for a patient anymore. They are for anyone who wants a little more versatility from their bed.

Some advantages of adjustable beds include:

1. Electrical motors. All of the adjustable beds on the market today use electrical motors. These motors work efficiently to move either section up or down. Many beds also offer extra settings. These settings can include a heat setting, a massage setting or both.

2. Medicinal Purposes. Adjustable beds have long proved to have several medical advantages. Some of their medical benefits include: the improvement of circulation, relieves lower back pain, decreases tension, improvement of breathing, decrease of acid reflux, etc. Adjustable beds allow the sleeper to sleep or rest in the semi-fowler position. This position is where the head is elevated to 30-45 degrees. Adjustable beds are also used often for patients who have recently undergone surgery.

3. Reading or relaxing. Many people like to read, watch T.V. or relax in their beds. Traditional mattresses can make it somewhat difficult to relax in bed. I know that reading often makes me extremely sleepy or uncomfortable when I read while lying flat. Adjustable beds make it easier to relax in bed. You can read while sitting up an lying down.

4. Comfort. Some people find traditional mattresses uncomfortable because they are so flat. Some people prefer to sleep while inclined at an angle. Adjustable beds provide the perfect amount of comfort for these people. They can relax to the position they want with just a push of a button.

Mobility scooters and related equipment

Due to a quite surprising range of neurological ailments, not to mention the increasing effects of advancing age, I have become sort of less mobile than I was in my younger days. Where I used to be able to briskly walk for many hours, I now move slowly at a tortoises pace, for no more than one hour, supporting myself with either a cane or a crutch - depending on how I happen to feel that day. Yet I refuse to complain: there's nothing I truly lack in this life, and diminished mobility doesn't really bother me.

Anyway, for the longer distances I nowadays employ a mobility scooter, which definitely makes me feel like a prince or even a sultan! Relaxedly sitting in a cusioned seat, nicely but never haughtly greeting the breathless passers-by, I buzz along at either walking pace or double speed. When I feel relaxed I ---===XML PARSE ERROR===---ldquo;walk---===XML PARSE ERROR===---rdquo;, when I actually need to be somewhere in time I crank up the little machine.

There are lots of people much worse off than me, when it comes to mobility. I can, albeit with difficulty, still walk - but a lot of others can't. Especially for those the mobility scooter is a great support, enabling them to feel free again. There are 3-wheel mobility scooters and 4-wheel mobility scooters, and if you happen to be considering buying such a contraption, I certainly recommend the 3-wheeled variety. They tend to be somewhat more manoeuvrable due to their smaller turning radius, which is a great advantage in crowded or cramped areas. I also would recommend to go for batteries with a large capacity: it's not only unpleasant but also extremely embarassing to find yourself out of juice when far away from home!

Electric mobility scooters http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=55

Electric mobility scooters are designed to assist those who have physical conditions that make walking difficult enjoy the sense of independence and freedom that comes from mobility. When selecting the appropriate make and model of an electric scooter the individual rider's overall physical condition and personal preferences need to be considered in relation to the basic construction of the scooter.

The basic construction should combine a backrest, seat and foot support to provide a comfortable and stable seating base. This enables riders to expend their energy on the essential activities, such as operating the vehicle and accomplishing tasks from within the mobility scooter rather than wasting effort trying to maintain a comfortable, upright position. The seat unit should have an anatomically contoured seat base and backrest and be wide enough to accommodate outdoor clothing if necessary. However, it should not be so wide that the user is forced to sit asymmetrically to feel properly supported. If the seat is too narrow it will become uncomfortable and increase the risk of pressure sores.

Try to choose an electric mobility scooter that has a seat and backrest which can be adjusted to meet individual comfort levels. Additionally, a seat with fold up armrests adds to the comfort of the rider, make transferring on and off the seat easier and will reduce the amount of physical strain on the upper body. A stable seating posture is essential in order to manage the vehicle's controls which are located on the tiller, or steering column and handlebars.

The tiller is the control and steering mechanism for the mobility scooter and has the controls to drive the scooter forward or in reverse, as well as steering the front wheels. Some tillers feature height and angle adjustability to ensure that the rider can comfortably reach the tiller and therefore has maximum control over the scooter. A console, centrally located on the tiller, has the supplementary controls for lights, indicators, horn and to power the unit on and off. Two hands are typically required to manage the tiller steering component of an electric mobility scooter. Some models can be controlled by only one hand if the model is equipped with one level for acceleration that switches for forward and reverse mode, however operating supplementary controls at the same time as steering can be difficult.

If the intended rider is interested in an electric mobility scooter that will travel as well as provide travel you will want to investigate transportable electric mobility scooters. Transportable mobility scooters can be dismantled for transport and storage. On larger scooters or those intended for rugged outdoor use, you may want to check the weight of the largest individual piece in order to be properly prepared to disassemble as individual components can still be quite heavy. Although a convenient feature, when you consider transporting a mobility scooter you will have to keep in mind that transporting the scooter will require it to be broken down before the next destination, assembled upon arrival, disassembled upon return and once again assembled for use at home. This may not seem very convenient, but when it comes to being able to join family and friends on a special outing or having to choose to not participate due to physical limitations, the break down and set up of the mobility scooter is a more than worthwhile small chore in comparison to the benefits it brings to the rider and their ability to interact independently with family and friends.

Adjustable beds and backpain http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=54

Adjustable beds by their very existence as mechanical marvels of design and function are perfectly adapted to alleviate many different symptoms associated with varied conditions that lead to back pain. If you suffer from lower back pain, your condition may be the result of a multitude of causes, many of which the sufferer has no clue as to how they got them in the first place.

The causes associated with back pain include muscle spasm or sprains, ligament sprains, joint problems or a slipped disk. Actual physical disability from instances such as work related accidents are another well-known cause of back pain. In all these instances, an adjustable bed can help alleviate your sore aching back. Why can an adjustable bed help you? You do not have to take my word for it. I am not a medical expert. But I do know how to quote them.

Through my research, I have found that medical experts advise that the best way to ease back pain is to position yourself with your back on the floor, with pillows under your knees, hips and knees bent, with your feet raised on a chair. Now imagine yourself in that position. Looks rather awkward, doesn?t it. Can you imagine doing this every time your back begins to act up? Now imagine yourself, if you can, in an adjustable bed perfectly aligned to provide the same comforting relief. Looks a lot better on an adjustable bed than on the floor, doesn?t it

There are other tips from medical advisors on relieving back pain. Heating pads are recommended to relax painful muscle spasms and medications such as Motrin, Aleve, Aspirin, Orudis and Tylenol, also reduce pain and swelling. Once again, an adjustable bed can help you!

Some adjustable beds, more notably electric adjustable beds, come equipped with soothing heating units built in. Some electric adjustable beds even have a vibrating feature to massage away that nagging sore back. As far as any relief you may get from taking medications, the adjustable bed manufacturers haven?t come up with anything to replace them yet. You will just have to place them on your night table next to your adjustable bed.

Adjustable beds come in a multitude of different shapes and sizes, models and types to fit most any budget. There are basic, hand operated adjustable beds, basic electric adjustable beds that elevate and configure themselves at the push of a button on a remote control unit, to the top of the line, everything you could ever want in an adjustable bed, electric adjustable bed. This type of electric adjustable bed will have all the bells and whistles and awe inspiring electronic gizmos, but will also carry a hefty price tag. But if you can afford it, go for it. After all, it?s your back that?s hurting.

For more serious back conditions as in the case of a person with a debilitating physical impairment, getting a hospital adjustable bed would be advisable. These adjustable beds are constructed far more sturdily in order to continual use in an acute care situation. If you find that an adjustable bed is just a little too pricy for you, there is an alternative and I don?t mean lying on the floor with your feet propped up on a chair.

If the price of the adjustable beds you like is out of your reach, you can always look for a good, used, cheap adjustable bed. I wont go into the details of how to get your hands on one of these cheap adjustable beds, other than to say that there are articles available that go into the specifics. Getting a good, used adjustable bed at a good price is not as hard as you may think.

One thing to remember, regardless of which adjustable bed you finally decide to buy, you will need a new adjustable bed mattress to go along with it. A mattress from an average flat bed will not fit or function properly on an adjustable bed. Just as with adjustable beds, there are varying degrees of quality, materials and prices associated with adjustable bed mattresses.

So, in closing, I say, let the shopping begin. You?ll only have your back to thank you, but it will be well worth it

Installing a stairlift http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=53

A stair lift is a mobility aid that is used by people to assist them with moving up and down a stair case. It usually consists of a chair or seat that runs on a supporting track of aluminium. Stair lifts can either be battery powered or run on electricity with the later models generally very energy efficient. If a new stair lift is out of your price range, there are many used stair lifts on the market. The space required by a stair lift is usually less than the space required by elevator and other types of mobility solutions. If space is at a premium, the stair lift can be installed with the stair case, but if more space is available, it can be installed with the wall. Stair lifts provide mobility and independence for movement in your home without any support and are also durable and do not require a lot of maintenance.

Various models are available, with several stair lifts allowing its user to stand and move. These particular chair lifts are sometimes called standing stair lifts and also perch lifts. These are especially beneficial for those who experience pain whilst sitting. However, chaired stair lifts are more common because of their demand and are designed for people who are unable to stand while moving up or down the stairs.

These stair lifts come in various designs which can help them to blend in with the decor of the building without a clinical look and feel. Different shapes of stair lifts are also available ranging from straight to curved, depending on the type of staircase. It is always important to keep the needs and requirements of the user in mind as well as aesthetic considerations when choosing which particular stair lift to go for.

Installation of straight stair lifts can be straightforward as they simply need to be attached to the straight staircase. Most of the times the installation services are offered by the companies that sell stair lifts. These companies have experienced installation teams which install these stair lifts for you. If you would like to install these stair lifts on your own this can be usually done with care. Stair lifts are not only cheaper than conventional elevators but can be personalised by raising them higher or lower in accordance to personal needs and requirements.

To summarise, not only does a stair lift provide easy mobility and safety, but can also give confidence back to less able individuals. As compared to an elevator or a lift, it is a more feasible option and a great addition to your home. As already mentioned the advantage of installing a straight staircase is its simplicity of installation, whereas the elevators and other kinds of lifts require a technical installation.

Why buy a mobility scooter http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=51

As a young man I thought I could take on the world but as I got older I doiscovered my body was just as frail as everybody else's. After an accident I became disabled and discovered that I couldn't even get down to the store to get my groceries but then someone suggested an electric mobility scooter and that changed my life.

If you buy a used mobility scooter it takes less time to save because you need to save up less money, for a product that is most likely in just as good condition, or near it, as a new mobility scooter. Many people may realize the advantages of buying used but are unsure where to go looking to find a good used mobility scooter. The simple truth is that there are practically lots of places to search in order to find the used mobility scooters you are looking for. Choosing a used scooter over a new one will not limit the selection that a person will be able to consider as much as you may think. There are plenty of online sites and online auctions that offer used mobility scooters for sale.

Buying online is very popular since the access to the World Wide Web allows you to see mobility scooters for sale from all parts of the country. If you would rather buy locally you can still do this online or you could look at local thrift stores and have a look in your local newspapers and magazines where you may find people selling their used mobility scooters. If nobody is advertizing then you could publish an advert yourself stating that you are looking for one and you may find somone who has a used scooter they no longer need.

Choosing the right stairlift http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=50

Climbing the stairs has been shown to become much more difficult and dangerous as a person's age increases. Often those that are older are not as resilient and do not heal as quickly, so a fall can be very hard to recover from. There are several ways to prevent falls, like avoiding the stairs or moving to an area without stairs, but these are in most cases impractical. In most instances a stair lift is the best way to prevent a fall on the stairs.

As a means of preventing falls and increasing accessibility, a stair lift ranks very high. For straight staircases, they cost much less than an elevator would be and can be installed with only slight modification to the stairs. Several self-install kits are often used, which can be installed in only a few hours and do not require any special tools.

Finding the right stair lift is important and there are several factors that you should consider. The overall length of the staircase and the weight of the occupant that is using the lift are two of the most important concerns. If the staircase is less than 35 feet, it is seldom an issue, but staircases that exceed 35 feet need a special type of lift. Most have a weight capacity that is around 350 pounds, but this varies by model. There are several available that can support a good deal more than 350 pounds, but often this is over a shorter distance.

You will need to get exact measurements of your stairs before ordering a lift, but most dealers can walk you through this process. It is, however, a good idea to get an approximate measurement of the length of your stairs before you begin looking at available models.

Those that use these lifts are able to access all areas of their home with only the push of a button and are much safer doing so.

Benefits of an adjustable bed. http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=49

With a touch of a button you can move the position that you lay in. These positions include the head, neck, shoulders, upper and lower back, hips, thighs, legs and feet can be positioned to increase the user's level of comfort. This is an excellent feature because the user does not have to get out of bed to adjust the bed to the desired position. This is especially important for people who may have a problem getting in and out of bed.

Electric adjustable beds are not the typical mattress and box springs set up that many of us currently sleep on. Instead of using solid materials, electric adjustable beds are filled with air. Instead of springs, electric adjustable beds have many separate pockets that are filled with air. Since there are no mechanical parts, electric adjustable beds can conform perfectly to the shape of your body, providing all the support you need to get a restful night of sleep.

Electric adjustable beds can have their firmness adjusted on the fly just by pushing a few buttons. Electric adjustable beds have a self contained pumping apparatus that can add or remove air from the bed so that the firmness can be set to any level that the sleeper desires. This is a great advantage over mattress and box springs beds, which are by their very nature non adjustable.

Some of the top of the line electric adjustable airbeds feature separate controls for each side of the bed. This means that partners can set the firmness on their side of the bed to the setting that suits them best. There is no need to compromise on comfort when using electric adjustable beds.

When you sleep your blood does not circulate through your body as efficiently as it does when you are up and moving around. Sleeping can be a very dangerous thing for people who have poor blood circulation because that's when blood clots are more likely to form. For a person with poor blood circulation in their legs and feet elevating them both can help alleviate the pain and swelling. Most people use pillows to prop their feet up to help with the pain and swelling. The problem with this method is that your legs and feet are confined to a small area (i.e. the pillows). During sleep we all move around and chances are that when you wake up your feet will no longer be propped up on the pillows.

Type of mobility scooters http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=48

Mobility scooters are designed for people who have some mobility but are challenged by slopes or distances. A wide variety of mobility scooters, in various price ranges, are available to fit your needs from leading manufacturers such as Invacare, Pride, Sunrise Medical and Drive Medical. Mobility scooters come in a number of styles which can accommodate a wide range of user needs. When selecting a mobility scooter one should consider where the scooter will primarily be used (indoor, outdoor or both), how often the scooter be transported in a car and any specific seating/accessory needs.

Most mobility scooters are defined by four features which separate them from power wheelchairs: Scooters are directed by a tiller at the front of the base that can steers the front wheel. This arm can be tilted and locked allowing a safe and comfortable ride for all users. Forward and reverse motion is controlled by two thumb levers. The seat of scooters is usually mounted on a stem, allowing many scooter seats to rotate from side to side. Finally, scooters have a base board instead of footrests. Scooters are steered using a tiller, you need sufficient arm strength to drive it and thumb mobility to use the controls.

Below is a brief outline of the three types of mobility scooters generally available. If you are not sure where to begin or if you need help picking the right scooter for you, please consult a mobility professional.

Foldable Mobility Scooters: Easily folded and ready for transport, these scooters are perfect for the active person who likes to travel. Additionally, foldable scooters, often called travel scooters, disassemble into light parts that are easy to lift into the trunk of most cars. Sealed batteries make these travel scooters airline safe; make sure to check with your carrier booking your flight.

3 Wheel Mobility Scooters: Looking for a full featured scooter with excellent maneuverability? You should consider a three wheel mobility scooters. Three wheeled scooters offer full-size comfort and are ideal for both indoor maneuverability and outdoor durability. Scooters in this category offer a wide array of features including: swivel seats, arms rests, storage baskets and more. And, with a maximum weight capacity of 300 to 400 lbs even larger framed users can be accommodated.

4 Wheel Mobility Scooters: A fourth wheel and a wider wheel base create the most stable platform within the mobility scooter category. Four wheel mobility scooters are designed for maximum stability and built specifically for outdoor use. Some larger models have knobby tires and high ground clearance; these scooters are a great choice for even rugged terrain. Some models offer a range of 25+ miles per charge and a top speed of 10 mph! The wide wheel base, which makes the 4 wheel mobility scooters great for outdoor use, often makes the turning radius wide as well. Indoor users with tight living spaces should keep this in mind.

Make sure to a mobility scooter is right for you. Consult with a doctor and mobility professional prior to purchase

Choosing the right mobility scooter. http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=46

Taking a look at the vast choices of mobility scooters available on the market today, you can be sure that there is one out there suitable to your needs. For example, some scooters are made to transport you over a variety of terrains, at speeds of up to 15 mph while others can make hairpin turns allowing you to maneuver the inside of your home. This is great news for someone who doesn't suffer from paralysis but does suffer from a mobility related disability.

A Basic Primer on the Different Types of Scooters on the Market
There are travel scooters designed to be portable and lightweight. This is the type to buy if you are a traveler and need a scooter that you can fold-up or disassemble easily to load into the trunk of your car. Travel scooters also tend to be the least expensive for a basic model but additional features will equal a higher priced model.

For versatility, the regular 3 wheel scooter is great because you can use it pretty comfortably both indoors and outdoors. This machine generally has a good turning radius, which is especially important for maneuvering around furniture and objects inside the house. If the primary use for your scooter is outside, you should consider a 4 wheeled scooter, which is more stable.
Stability with 4 Wheels
The next scooter type, the 4 wheel, doesn't have as excellent a turning radius of the travel scooter or the 3 wheel mobility scooter, but as mentioned above, it offers more stability. This larger machine scores higher marks in durability, too. If you need a stable scooter to navigate rugged terrain (and to use mostly outdoors), the 4 wheel scooter is your best choice. Another advantage is that these scooters tend to go the fastest and have the longest battery range. Some other features to consider if you plan to use the scooter outside to also have a master key lock, reflectors, a horn, a locking seat and an automatic circuit breaker to cut off all power so that the automatic braking system will bring the scooter to a stop in case of an electrical problem
Once you've determined the type of scooter that best meets your needs, it's time to do some research on brands, models and a reliable dealer. Factors that will affect your decision will be the price, range, comfort and weight capacity. Of course, there are other factors that you may want to consider when deciding on a scooter, so be sure to list out everything that concerns you.
Getting Around
If you are using your scooter inside your house but have uneven surfaces, such as a transition between two rooms, you will need a small threshold ramp. Portable scooter ramps come in a number of different types to handle a variety of situations such as getting up sidewalks, curbs or a few steps.
What About Transporting Your Scooter
If you plan on traveling by vehicle with your mobility scooter (other than a travel scooter) you will need to use either a lift or carrier. The carrier usually resides outside your van, and it is designed to transport your scooter where you need to go. Lifts and carriers can weigh between 75 and 200 pounds so you should confirm that your vehicle can handle the weight of passengers, the scooter carrier and the scooter before installation.

Measuring For Your Stairlift

Sometimes health problems increase as we age. These health problems end up preventing us from doing normal tasks that we would usually do without these ailments. Throughout the years, stair lifts has provided a great aid for people who are unable to travel up or downstairs. Before buying a stair lift, it is always important to have the correct measurements of the stairway on hand.

When measuring your stairway, it is always best to measure twice. You want to be as accurate as possible so when it's time to install the stair lift, there won't be any problems. Always begin at the very top of the step and, with a measuring tape, measure all the way to the bottom. Make sure that the measuring tape doesn't sag in between the steps.

After this, measure the depth, the diagonal distance from edge to edge of one step, height, width, and depth. Doing these measurements will prove that the aforementioned measurements are correct and that stair lift will fit. The last thing you should do is measure the length of the bottom step to the closest wall next to the stairs.

Mobility Scooters and the Highway Code

From The Guardian:

Mobility scooters, capable of hitting speeds up 8mph, are being kept in check by a new highway code, warning users of the dangers of speeding and drink driving.

A booklet created by Herefordshire Council is trying to enforce the strict 4mph rule for mobility scooters and warn of the dangers that elderly and disabled face while using the vehicles.

More from The Guardian:

Herefordshire Council has spent hundreds of pounds drawing up the booklet, which features cartoon characters in various scenarios, such as one man who has got his scarf caught under his wheel, and a granny caught up in traffic.

The guidelines helpfully advise users: ---===XML PARSE ERROR===---ldquo;Do not use your scooter if you have been drinking alcohol or taking drugs---===XML PARSE ERROR===---rdquo;.

It warns users: ---===XML PARSE ERROR===---ldquo;Make sure that you know what all the switches and levers on your scooter do, and that you can control it properly before you go out on it.---===XML PARSE ERROR===---rdquo;

It points out the potential pitfalls scooter users face, telling them to plan their journey accordingly and make sure they have enough battery power as ---===XML PARSE ERROR===---ldquo;steep hills, high kerbs or other obstructions may make it impossible to tackle certain routes---===XML PARSE ERROR===---rdquo;.

The new code also forbid extra passengers from hitching a ride - including pets which may prove a distraction

Disability Living Aids -Stair and Bath Lifts http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=39

Disability Living Aids - Stair and Bath Lifts

Tripping down or falling are some of the problems faced by the elderly and the partially immobilized. The injury from the falls in turn leads to further disability and limits independent and active life. Simple changes in the environment and life styles can stop the likelihood of tripping down or falling.

The barrier of stairs can be removed by using a stair lift. These electrically operated devices are easy to use and not very expensive.

Stair lifts are also known as stair gliders, stair chairs or chair lifts. They carry the disabled or the elderly gently and safely up the stairs. Ensure that the stair lift can swivel at the upper landing and turn away from the stairs to provide a confident and safe method to get off. If the stair lift comes with a remote control, it will assist the caregiver in case the individual could not operate the controls themselves.

When selecting a stair lift ensure it can maneuver curved and narrow stairs. It should also negotiate corridors and intermediate landings without any problem. There should be a battery back-up available in the stair lift so that during power outages, the lift should continue to operate. For more info visit www.only-disabled-aids.info

One of life's pleasures is to relax in the bath easing away the aches, stresses and pains. To assist the disabled and the senior citizens lacking easy mobility to enjoy the therapeutic value of a bath, a bath lift can be used.

Bath lifts have a seat, which in turn fitted in the bath, and it moves up and down. The user can slide from the side of the bath into the seat and the lift lowers the user gently into the bath. Similarly, after the bath, the seat lifts the user to the top of the bath.

Batteries power most of the bath lifts and the lifts can also work from the mains. The batteries are a safe back up in case of power outage.

Bath lifts are not suitable for users who cannot get on and off the seat of the lift and who cannot lift the legs over the rim of the bath. Persons with such acute disabilities, a hoist or a fixed lift are more suitable than the portable bath lift.

Most of the bath lifts available on the market fit in the standard shaped baths. In order to hold its place the bath lifts are provided with a sucker at every corner of its base.

Ensure that the bath seat can go deep into the bath so that a deeper bath with less water is assured.

Choosen a stairlift. http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=38

Stair lifts make life easier for many people who find it a struggle to use the stairs in their home. If you or a loved one has limited mobility, your staircase needn't be daunting. By installing a home stair lift, you can remain independent in your own home and get rid of the daily problems that the stairs present. If you're considering purchasing a stair lift, here are some things to take into account and help make your decision clearer.

When buying a new stair lift, a representative from the supplier will need to visit your home to take measurements of your staircase and assess your needs. It can be helpful to have a friend or relative with you to ask questions and make notes. Ask for a written quotation and take time to think about any offer before making your decision. Stair lifts can be costly, so it is worth shopping around and getting quotes from a few different companies to compare their prices, terms and conditions and level of warranty. Used stair lifts are generally cheaper, but be wary of buying secondhand from a private sale as there is unlikely to be any warranty. Reconditioned stair lifts from a reputable supplier can be good value, but check the extent of the guarantee before you buy.

Stair lifts can be fitted to any staircase. Straight stair lifts are for simple straight staircases, whereas curved stair lifts can be adapted to negotiate stairs that turn or bend. Outdoor stair lifts are also available, and can be fitted to outside steps if required, to provide access to an entrance door or to a garden for example. There are various optional features that can be included depending on your needs. For instance, if you have arthritis, you may find it painful to press the control buttons, in which case you could opt to have a joystick fitted instead. A swivel seat is another useful feature, making it easier to get on and off your stair chair.

Moving up or down the stairs is safer and more comfortable in a sitting position, so the majority of stairlifts have a chair to sit in. However, variations are available for people who find it difficult to sit. Stand-on stair lifts can be fitted to straight staircases, for people who can't easily bend their legs, although for safety reasons these do tend to have a weight limit. Perching stair lifts are another type, suitable for people who find it hard to bend their knees or straighten their legs fully.

Whatever your particular needs, a representative from a stair lift manufacturer should be able to advise you on the most suitable model for you and will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Having a stair lift installed can transform your life and give you the peace of mind of knowing that your stairs are no longer an obstacle.

Walk in baths features http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=37

Walk In Baths have many bespoke features to help improve access and the bathing experience for the user. Some features will be offered as standard on a walking in bath ''package'' whilst others will be added extras. It is important to understand these features and what is including in your quote, before making the decision to buy.

We have complied a list of main features to help you research;

Thermostatic Mixer Taps - The addition and quality of the mixer tap is vital to a walking bath as the user will be sat in it when filling. It is thus essential that the water is easily controlled, filling at the correct temperature and at a sufficient rate.

Quick Fill - As with the above fill time is a key factor when deciding on a walk in baths. Manufactures now offer different ''quick fill'' systems that increase the flow of water and reduce filling time.

Grab Rails - The accessibility of grab hand rails is an important factor in the safety of a walk in bath.

Slip Resistant Floor - Look closely at the fool material to ensure it offers good grip when wet to improve safety. Some walk in baths offer the option of a rubber mat to help improve grip.

Safety Seating - Some walk in baths can be fitted with a seat to help accessibility and use.

Quick Drainage - As with the mixer tap drainage time is crucial as the user will be in the bath as it empties. If a bath takes to long to empty the user may suffer from the cold, especially if they are elderly. Some walk in baths can now be fitted with dual drainage systems that can half the time the bath takes to empty.

Hydrotherapy System - This creates a Spa / Jacuzzi effect using jets mounted around the bath. These systems can be beneficially for some medical conditions or simply to ease aches and pains.

DIY stairlifts http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=35

DIY stairlifts

There is a growing trend for customers to buy a home stair lift and to install it themselves. This trend is encouraged by many dealers who sell residential stair lifts - especially via the internet - as they imply that installation is child's play, will save the customer money and is what most customers want anyway. However many organizations are concerned about self-installation of stair chair lifts.

The British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) has warned that many disabled people are putting their lives at risk by DIY installation of home stair lifts. BHTA director general Ray Hodgkinson thinks DIY stairlifts are ---===XML PARSE ERROR===---quot;an accident waiting to happen---===XML PARSE ERROR===---quot;.

Many disabled people are on low incomes and believe that they will save money by installing a stair chair lift by themselves. But they are warned that they might be saving money in the short term but they will pay in the long term.

David Jenkins, a product safety advisor for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents backs this advice. He says: ---===XML PARSE ERROR===---quot;The implications of getting it wrong would not only be financial.---===XML PARSE ERROR===---quot;There could be serious injury or even death.---===XML PARSE ERROR===---quot;

In the US this concern has been expressed by the AMEA (Accessibility Equipment Manufacturer's Association). The AMEA states that no individual can know whether they have properly installed a home stair lift unless they have received expert training. The average consumer will also be unaware of conformance requirements with both local and national codes; in many localities, the codes referenced are the ASME A17.1, the A18.1, and the NFPA70 (National Electrical Code). Finally, the AMEA, points out that the customer could be breaking the law. If the stair chair lift requires any wiring to the mains supply, many states prohibit this unless it is carried out by a qualified technician.

Stair lifts may look simple but they are complex machines using the latest technology; only someone with the required training can confidently install one.

Another reason why many dealers prefer customers to self install a home stair lift is because there is no come back if things go wrong. The dealer can always throw up his hands and put the blame solely on incorrect installation. Many customers are negating many warranties when they install a stair lift by themselves.

The elderly and the disabled are often seen as easy victims - especially by internet traders. A good tip is to only deal with suppliers who insist that they carry out the installation. This, not only shows that the supplier cares about his customers' safety, it will also protect the customer in the long term should anything go wrong with the stair lift.

Buying a home stair lift is expensive. But a stair lift can usually be fitted in a matter of a few hours by an experienced installer; therefore the cost of installation, compared to the overall cost, is quite small.

Back pain adjustable beds benefits http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=34

People those who has back pain should be choosy about the type of bed and mattress they sleep on. There is very little research about what types of mattresses and beds are best for the back and no medical research about adjustable beds. So there is lot of questions about whether or not an adjustable bed is a better option than a flat mattress for people with back pain. Through this article a brief review about adjustable bed, how it works and some theoretical advantages that some patients might find helpful too.

How adjustable bed works

An adjustable bed can be adjusted to a number of different positions. For persons with certain types of back problems, sleeping on an adjustable bed that is at a slight incline may be comfortable, with the upper body positioned higher up than the lower body as when sitting in a recliner and some support under the knees to bend the knees at a slight angle. The blend of upper body incline and the knee support can help to off load some of the stress from the lower back. Provided that the patient is happy sleeping in this manner through the night, this position can support the curves to the spine and relieve pressure on the whole body.

Potential benefits of an adjustable bed

Back pain adjustable beds benefits

An adjustable bed has the potential to help anyone who feels more comfortable in an inclined position like sitting on a recliner with the feet up or rather than when lying on a regular flat mattress. Specially after having low back surgery, some patients feel that an adjustable bed is more comfortable than a flat mattress. Like most of the choices when it comes to mattresses, this is largely a matter of personal preference. In general, it is sensible for a patient to consider the alternative of an adjustable bed if the person feels better sitting in a reclining chair with the knees supported or slightly elevated and if the individual is having trouble getting a good night's rest on a usual flat mattress. If a patient is not sure whether they would be benefited from an adjustable bed, or is not sure about buying a new bed, then it is also possible to use pillows to prop up the upper body and placing a pillow beneath the knees. It can be alternative to such bed but not as comfortable like them.

Caring for the elderly - adjustable bed http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=33

Caring for the elderly - adjustable bed.

It is a major commitment to look after a loved one with physical dependencies in your home. There are only a few people who have undergone the training that a geriatric nurse has undergone. The typical person does not have the equipment necessary for safe and less burdensome daily care of the elderly.

Care-giving equipment previously seen only in elder care facilities is now available through many supply companies for reasonable prices. Now electrically adjustable and conveniently designed beds are available and are suitable for all homes.

Beds of this sort go many times further than any normal adjustable bed designed only to raise the back and knee rests for reading. These beds are specially made for those who can't get around easily and must spend most of their time in the bed. Not only can one adjust the back and upper leg rests, but they can also change height, lower leg positions and tilt functions.

When caring for someone who has little or no mobility thus making it impossible for them to move from their bed, it is necessary to help them switch positions regularly without to much strain.

When a person is on bed rest, they will usually have poor circulation that can result in swelling from fluid retention, pain, and could eventually cause blood clots if not properly cared for. Pressure sores and ulcers can cause much suffering. If a person is not moved from one position, tissue near pressure points can start to die due to blocked blood flow. Reduced mobility can lead to other complications like contractures, constipation, or urinary tract infections. In order to avoid this, you should move a person with mobility problems every two hours.

It is very important to select the proper bed. It is such an important investment in keeping the person comfortable. Believe it or not, they are also investments in your own health, safety and comfort. If you do not have proper training, you are in real danger of a back injury or strain. An adjustable bed lessens the risk of injury and eases heavy work If mobility is limited, consider lifting equipment that would help you transfer the person in between their bed and their wheelchair.

More and more elderly people are now being cared for at home. Because of this very reason, businesses have made useful, good-looking, and affordable equipment to help care for them. This will make care giving at home easier and extremely possible in most cases.

What are Adjustable Beds? http://www.mobility-articles.co.uk/index.asp?Action=ARTICLE%20MODULE%20DISPLAY%20ARTICLE&RecordID=30

What are Adjustable Beds?

Adjustable beds are frequently seen and used in hospitals. They have been proven to have several medical benefits and can make home medical care much easier. Their popularity in private settings began in the 1960's and has since grown tremendously. They have been featured in many movies and TV shows and other areas of pop culture. Currently there are several different models and manufacturers of adjustable beds available on the market today.

Modern adjustable beds utilize electric motors to manipulate the head and foot sections of the bed. Most utilize an attached remote to control the bed, but some beds utilize wireless remotes instead. A wireless remote is great if you are a care giver because you can adjust the bed easily and can also control when the bed can be used. A wired remote on the other hand is attached directly to the bed. This is nice because you never have to worry about the remote being lost or inaccessible. Most beds that offer a wireless remote can be configured with an attached remote instead.

There are many accepted health benefits that can be gained from using an adjustable bed. Adjustable beds can help to reduce swelling, improve circulation, and lessen back and neck pain. They are also great at controlling acid reflux and reducing heartburn. This is because when you lay down it is easier for acid to pass from the stomach through the throat. During the day, while standing or sitting, gravity actually helps to fight acid reflux and heartburn. As soon as you lay down you typically loose this advantage. An adjustable bed helps because it is possible to sleep with your upper body in a slightly elevated position. This helps to reduce acid reflux and heartburn by returning the advantage of gravity to your corner.

While there are many different medical reasons for purchasing an adjustable bed, it has become increasingly common for people to purchase these devices for comfort reasons rather than out of medical necessity. This is because they make it much more comfortable to read and watch TV in bed. Some models feature special heat and massage, which can be a great way to relieve stress. King sized adjustable beds offer a very unique service because they are in essence two twin beds that can operate independently of one another. This is great if you share a bed because it is possible to have two completely different sleeping positions, or to use the beds in unison as one bed. It is possible, for instance, to watch TV while your partner is sleeping with a king bed. Smaller beds such as queens and doubles are only one piece and can not be controlled in the same manner.

There are many devices in hospitals that can be of benefit in residential settings, but the most common and perhaps convenient is the adjustable bed. When you make the switch from normal bed to adjustable bed you will be pleasantly surprised and will never want to go back.

You?ll only have your back to thank you, but it will be well worth it.
